She Says...
Who should pay for dates?

He Says...

Male, Single, Never Married, Moderate Catholic, thirty-something

On a first date when I asked the other person out,  I take the
bill and pay even when my date offers to pay.
On a first date when I was asked out, I take the bill, but let
him/her pay if they offer.

The person who asked the other person out should pay for the
first date.  The man should pay for subsequent dates.
Male, Single, Never Married, Moderate Catholic, forty-something

Female, Single, Never Married, Moderate Catholic,
forty-something

The man should pay for the first date and subsequent dates.
Initially, the man should pay. They are the pursuers and need
to take this role. I would treat once in the while.  I really want to
make sure they are taking an active role in pursuing.

If your dating partner communicates to you that he/she wants you to
pay sometimes, how would you feel?
It depends. If you go dutch, it
feels like a friendship which could be fine if starting out as
friends. Once you are in a 'dating relationship', I would hope he
takes the lead. Then once in a while, I would treat them. (ie.
making dinner, taking them out to a play or concert). I would
prefer the taking turns and treating each other rather than
going dutch all the time.

Female, Single, Never Married, Progressive Catholic,
forty-something

The person who asked the other person out should pay for the
first date and the tab should be split for subsequent dates.

Paying for dates should be an easy give and take with both
people paying at different times, but not constant "keeping
tabs" on whose turn it is.
